Priced out a 2019 Ranger Lariat. Added the FX4 package, running boards, equipment group 501A (for the B&O stereo), and tonneau cover.

$45 grand my people. Fouty five thousand dollars. For a Ford Ranger.

Something is amiss in the world......

I know, I know - I priced out the top of the line truck. But that’s stupid money for a Ranger.

I mean, a Canyon can hit $50k USD if you fully spec it out, and a Tacoma can hit over $40k, so that’s not too absurd in the current market.

I bet you didn’t even notice I didn’t consider the Frontier until I wrote this.

damn, even an XLT Crew Cab 4x4 with Sync3 is $37k. Or $34,825 if I opt for a Super Cab.

However, I’m sure there’ll be some incentive, At least maybe $2k?

Now let’s see... The F-150 XLT with a 2.7, super cab and sync3 (larger screen) : Just a hair under $40k, and lot’s of money in incentives.

Me-thinks the Ranger is going to need an ample amount of incentives to sell the way Ford would like it to.

There’s a flavor for everybody.

I ended up at $30,590 . But I would probably keep a Ranger pretty bare bones. 6' bed 4x4, blue lightning, bed & trailer packages, floor mats .

Ford seems to have studied under Porsche when it comes to options pricing and packages.

My gf just bought a new Focus ST. She opted for the base package, so the car was just a bit over $20K. If one elected for all the packages and bells/whistles, the options add up to $7000! $7K on a $20K car? That seems ridiculous to me.

Psst.....cars are expensive. 150 Raptor is 75k specced out to how I would like it. ZR2 Colorado is 47 k, Taco TRD is about 44 k or more as well.

No thanks but this I’ll take.

I’d take  the roush kit at 640 hp though so I get a warranty but I wonder how much it would be if I added 4x4.

The Canyon, Ranger, and Taco are competitors.  The Frontier is a ‘competitor’ to the 5 year old used versions of these.

Finance it like everyone else for 8 years and be part of the car loan bubble.

My buddy’s new Tacoma fully loaded had a MSRP of over $45,000 and he could have easily gone a bit more.

A fully F150 is about $67,000, so $45,000 isn’t far off for that size.  Of course this is before incentives.

Toss the rose-colored glasses, cheap trucks are a thing of the never.

Adjusting for inflation a 1994 Ford Ranger XL 4x4 Supercab would be $26k in 2018 dollars, just $2k cheaper than a 2018 Ford Ranger XL 4x4 Supercab.

Maybe not cheap, but the increase in the price of a new truck seems more pronounced than the increase in the price of a new car, adjusted for inflation:

Unles s you can get a deal, mid-sized truck are a rip off. I was looking at a Canyon Denali 4x4 c rew cab .....$40,000!!!

Also, while prices might seem similar for similarly optioned trucks, in 1994 you probably had more lower trim options like the now mostly extinct standard cab or 2wd.

It does seem goofy. I mean, I know it’s a new truck and it’s getting close to 2020 and all.

I’m sure it’s more psychological than anything. My head in stuck in 1995 -to-early-2000's prices. And that just ain’t so any more.

But dammit - 45 grand for a Ranger just tweaks my soul.

And for what it’s worth, I’ve seen brand new base model C anyons selling in the high $ 17k - low $ 18k range fairly consistently in Washington State, which generally has a higher than national average pricing on new trucks.

2wd prices stack up the same and they didn’t lose regular cab midsize pickups to be mean or something, they lost them because nobody bought them. I hate the ‘well full sizes aren’t much more expensive...’ argument against mid-size trucks because most buyers aren’t even coming close to using the full capabilities of a midsize so a full size has no benefits but is much more unweildly, the one place this argument makes sense is for work trucks and pretty much all regular cabs are bought as work trucks.

All the small trucks are 45k speced all the way up. Canyon, Colorado, Ranger, Tacoma...

But for the most part wages haven't kept up with inflation, so the cost really does hurt more.

Average transaction prices on a 1/2 ton truck are around $50k, and 3/4 and 1 tons are closer to $60k.

Also, most of them have a certain amount of rebates built in to the price. Finding a full size for $8-$10k off sticker generally isn’t difficult.

The moral of the story is that trucks in general are expensive.

Until Americans quit buying trucks and the manufacturers stop adding all of the gingerbread crap they are only going to get more expensive.

I would actually pay a premium over an F-150 just to get something that isn't a god damn behemoth. I don't need a brodozer. I need a reliable truck that'll do dump runs and move furniture now and again. Full size trucks are fucking huuuuge nowadays. A Tacoma from 2018 is as big as a tundra was ten years ago.
